Heading to London to Meet E. L. James: A Full-Circle Moment for an Indie Author

There are moments in an author’s journey where everything comes full circle. Tonight is one of those nights for me.

I’m on my way to London to meet E. L. James, the author who reshaped the landscape for self-published writers worldwide. Fifty Shades of Grey started as an indie release, later selling 150 million copies and achieving box-office success. For writers like me, her story wasn’t just news; it was proof of what is possible when you take your work into your own hands and find your audience.

We’ve exchanged a few messages on Instagram, but meeting her in person feels surreal. I’m bringing along a copy of my very first book to give her, inscribed with a simple note: "Thank you for giving indie authors a voice."

As a self-published author, it’s easy to get lost in the daily grind of drafting, editing, formatting, and marketing. But events like tonight are a reminder of why we do this. They remind us of the community, the inspiration, and the incredible paths opened by authors who paved the way before us.

London, here I come! I can't wait to share how the evening goes.

Have you ever met an author who completely changed your perspective on writing? Let me know!
