Every writer hopes to create a story that stays with a reader long after they turn the final page. But occasionally, a piece of feedback arrives that completely stops you in your tracks.
Yesterday, I woke up to a beautiful review for After Light from the wonderful Holly K. Miller. It started with a phrase I have never seen in my ten years of writing:
"Well...this is a first. I've been compelled to leave a review before even finishing a book. It's THAT GOOD."
As an author, reading those words is the ultimate reward. When I sat in my writing sanctuary charting out Maya’s notebook of intentions and Max’s hidden past, I wanted to write something that felt naturally immersive. I wanted the rugged coastlines of Skye and the emotional weight of Maya's diagnosis to feel completely real. Hearing Holly say that “their emotions are my emotions as I read” means everything to me, because I pour so much of my own lived experience and heartbreak into these characters.
Holly also added a beautiful note that beautifully sums up the heart of the book: “Fair warning: You're going to need tissues for this one. And it might just make you re-evaluate the quality of the light in your life.”
To Holly, if you are reading this, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for letting Maya and Max into your life, and for being brave enough to sit with a story that is both inspirational and devastating. I hope the rest of the journey treats you well (and yes, keep those tissues close!).
To my lovely Rosettes, moments like this are why I keep the discipline, why I keep staring at the blank page, and why I keep releasing these stories into the world. After Light is officially working its magic, and I couldn't be more grateful.
Have you started your journey with Maya and Max yet?
